Watercolor and Mixed-media Workshops

Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Mayslake-Peabody, Oakbrook, IL, 10AM – 4PM

Throughout her art career, Sandie Bacon has been concerned about how the natural world and life cycles are to be observed, honored, and protected. Much of her artwork is on the Great Lakes and Oceans. She frequently combines images from mythology and popular culture, oscillating between figurative and abstract approaches in her artwork. Sandie has an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and is a certified Working Artist for Golden Paints. Sandie teaches widely throughout the Midwest and her artwork is shown nationally, represented in many private and corporate collections. She has also won numerous public commissions. She is a Golden Paint Working Artist, Silver Brush Her website is: www.sandiebaconstudio.com email: sandiebacon1@gmail.com Phone: (847) 668-1503 Sandie Bacon’s workshop will be Botanical Monoprints from Native Plants. In her words, “The midwest botanical life is rich and diverse. We will look at real plants, their geometry and relationship to the environment and use them in a series of monoprints made with gellie plates. Think beautiful silhouettes of ferns, linear grasses and a variety of leaves and grasses combined with paint.” For artists of all levels. Paints included. Anne Farley Gaines paints watercolors directly from nature and produces mixed-media works in the studio using a variety of materials. Like Sandie Bacon, she is also a muralist. Her works, which sometimes incorporate ceramic parts, encompass a wide range of techniques. In recent years she has become a member of Artists for Climate Awareness and has given workshops on art related to the environment in several Midwest states. She originated and curated the current exhibition at Mayslake, “Midwest Nature: Its Beauty and Its Peril. At this point in her career, Anne is particularly interested in interpreting scenes near shorelines, coastal regions and waterfalls. She has an MFA from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and has completed several public commissions. In 2022 she received an Individual Artists Project Grant from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. www.annefarleygaines.com; email: GAINESART@yahoo.com (312)203-9964. Her workshop will be Pleine-Aire Interpretations of the Mayslake-Peabody Landscape focusing on an area outside the building where classes are held. Tall grasses and bulrushes are next to a marsh. She will start with a demo that includes plant life and might encourage students to use some actual grasses in the afternoon botanical monoprint segment taught by Sandie Bacon. Paper will be provided. Here is the link to sign up for her afternoon workshop: http://apm.activecommunities.com/fpddc/Activity_Search/22208
